    Desktop and Icon font settings

    I just installed Build 15063.

    I went to change the desktop icon fonts (make them bold and a point larger), but I cannot find the settings for this.

    I've done it several times before, so either they moved it, it got turned off, or (very possibly) I am losing my mind.

    Which of the three is it this time? If the settings are there, then where?

    Regards,

    Right click on the Desktop and on Display Settings. Look in Display and then Advanced Display Settings if further tuning is required.

    So I take it, Joe, that then there is no way to adjust desktop and menu fonts?

    Do you mean the Display > Text size dialog has gone? (I'm not in the Insider program so I can't check myself.)

    icon_font.png
    Click to enlarge

    MS may have removed the dialog but I very much doubt it has removed the settings from the registry, which means a registry edit should be all you need.

    The default settings for icon and menu text are Segoe 9, not bold. These are stored in:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\IconFont

    and

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\MenuFont

    The settings are stored as binary rather than a simple string or decimal value but they are easy to adjust by importing a REG file with just the required changes.

    A REG file for the default settings would look like this:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
    "IconFont"=hex:f4,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,\
      00,00,01,00,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,67,00,6f,00,65,00,20,00,55,00,49,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
    "MenuFont"=hex:f4,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,00,\
      00,00,01,00,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,67,00,6f,00,65,00,20,00,55,00,49,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
    If you want the icon and menu text to be one point size larger and in bold then the REG file would look like this:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
    "IconFont"=hex:f3,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,bc,02,00,00,00,\
      00,00,01,00,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,67,00,6f,00,65,00,20,00,55,00,49,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
    "MenuFont"=hex:f3,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,bc,02,00,00,00,\
      00,00,01,00,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,67,00,6f,00,65,00,20,00,55,00,49,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
      00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
    I've attached a ZIP file with both REG files so you can increase the icon and menu size to Segoe 10 (and bold) or revert back to the default Segoe 9, not bold. Once you've un-zipped them, just double-click on the Icons and Menus font size 10, bold on.reg file to import it into the registry. Note that you'll either have to sign out/sign in or restart for the change to take effect.

    Hope this helps...

    Rick,

    That helped a lot. Thanks! Maybe MS will bring the dialog back...they did fix the login/numlock issue it appears, so maybe?

    Rick, that really helps. Is it possible to do the same thing with window title bar fonts?

    Hi Chuck - I've added the window titlebar setting. It looks like it's called the CaptionFont and, unlike the settings for icons and menus, it has a height and width string value that changes.

    Default - Segoe 9, not bold
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics]
    "CaptionFont"=hex:f4,ff,ff,ff,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,90,01,00,00,\

    "CaptionHeight"="-330"

    On behalf of all those with less than optimal vision as well as those that simply prefer this "adjustment" I thank you! You "am" the best! Now in a perfect world, or at least one closer than we are at present, MS will see this thread and act upon it for the next update!

    Nothing wrong with a little hope, is there?

    I'm glad I was able to help. I doubt MS monitor this forum but hopefully someone on the Insider program will report that the Advanced display settings link is missing.

    It's just a link to Display in the Control Panel. Can you not get to it via Start > Control Panel > Display?

    Alternatively you should be able to use its CLSID.

    1. Right-click on the Start button and select Run.
    2. Enter explorer shell:::{C555438B-3C23-4769-A71F-B6D3D9B6053A} then press the OK button.

    Click to show animation

    (For more info, see Windows 10: CLSID Key (GUID) Shortcuts List for Windows 10)

    Hope this helps...

    Rick, I see no "Display" in either the Icons view or Category view.There were/was access in earlier (Insider) builds, but apparently they were removed.

    Microsoft is gradually moving all the Control Panel Applets into Settings. Display is the latest casualty and was moved to Settings > System > Display. In it, text size has been replaced with:
    Change the size of text, apps, and other items.

    I was able to get Build 15063 up-and-running so I can now see what you mean. No Control Panel link in Start's Power menu either and the CLSID for Display's advanced settings has been removed or changed. It looks like you'll just have to use the registry tweaks instead.
