I need an easy to maintain and use mail merge for e-mail program (free or fee)

I have a friend who co-chairs a scientific conference. He has to send several e-mail documents e.g. conference meeting notices, call for papers, etc. to about 1500 members several times during the year. He has been using Google's software but finds it too constrained. For example, he is limited to about 900 persons per address list and, thus, has to maintain at least 3 separate lists. Can anyone suggest a free or fee program that is not too complex from the user's perspective and can handle a fairly large address list. The ability to insert other than just a name/address field would be helpful also. He can use a program compatible with Win XP, Win 7, maybe Win 8.

    Mailchimp

    GetResponse

    AWeber

    Constant Contact

I've used above paid solutions successfully years ago—since they seem to be still around, they should all still be pretty solid.

Others I can't vouch for personally:

    Campaign Monitor

    SendinBlue

    Vertical Response

    SendinBlue

    NetHunt

    Elastic Email

ETA: There weren't any free options when I last looked into it around 2010, other than installing your own list server if you have a server available. But then, you could still be bound by sending limits unless you have a share on a specialist email server.

MailChimp would be my first choice, though at 1,500 subscribers you might be close to their free limit.
