Drive properties - why won't it stick?

A friend has an external USB disk full of her favourite movies which she's transmogrified from the [purchased] originals to MP4 format so she can watch them on her smart TV and on her tablet. That all works OK apparently.

Unfortunately, every time she accesses this external USB disk from her PC, it shows each file as some kind of 'Video' preview icon and is incredibly slow to load a representation of the drive's contents. She keeps changing the drive's custom properties to General Items time and time again... but this never sticks and always reverts back to 'Videos'.

Note that this is NOT a folder view issue (List, Details, Tiles, etc.), just a drive/folder content issue.

She wants the drive/folder properties to stick to General Items. which apparently is a 'Folder' property... but - also apparently - isn't a persistent property:

    Does anyone have a solution/suggestion?

See if the suggestion in this Super User answer is of any use.

Just a thought—ie I don't know: Maybe the setting won't hold for a drive, maybe only for folders.

How are the movies stored? If they're all in the root, try moving them into a folder.
