Is there an appointment app. that will do what I want it to do ?

A bit late to the discussion, but if you use Thunderbird, you might find the calendar useful. I have used it for several years to remind me of certain events. It will pop up a reminder on-screen, and you can select how much time in advance of the event the reminder pops up.
